Harris Post - Term 3, Week 5

The culmination of Zooz camps this week was another of the ‘lasts’ for me – my last Zooz camp. Happily, it was great; freezing cold, but full of ruach and wonderful to see the students having such fun whilst learning. I have always been a great supporter of experiential education and am confident that the learning which takes place through activities and events such as Zooz camp is deep, meaningful and long-lasting.
I had a fabulous Saturday night and discovered that there are two key things to ensure enhanced camp enjoyment. Firstly, make sure you’re in charge of a rather marvellous group of Year 11 girls who chat to you in a sociable manner and then instantly go to sleep after lights out. Secondly, bring a heated throw that plugs in and enables you to wrap yourself up like a maggot and maintain delicious warmth all night. Success!
Lying there in the warmth I was able to appreciate all the hard work that goes into providing these amazing opportunities for Carmel students. There is the team of OKCs who spend many months planning the activities and maintain energy levels as the camps proceed. Then there is CSG, the guards who provide us with overnight security and do not have the benefit of being indoors during those cold night hours. Mr Lawrence and his team of dedicated experiential staff alongside the Jewish Life and Learning staff devote a significant portion of their lives to be present on camp during Zooz. They are also accompanied by secular staff, most of whom take their turns on camp duty.
Last but certainly not least, a huge thank you must go to the many parents and friends of Carmel whose camp catering skills ensure the hungry hordes are well fed. Without exaggeration, this involves months of pre-camp cooking and freezing, as well as cooking and serving during the camp itself, plus all the duties that keep the kitchen hygienic and functioning. Parents and volunteers - we salute you and are genuinely grateful for your contributions. If helping with camp food before or during Zooz camps is something that you could contribute, please get in touch with Mr Lawrence to offer your services. The hungry students of Carmel are always most appreciative of your assistance; these camps couldn’t run without your support.
Shabbat shalom.
